Mechanical engineering combines a range of technical, creative, and management skills. It plays an important role in a range of sectors including aerospace, energy management, and surgical innovation.
This degree focuses on mechatronics – the integration of electrical and mechanical components. This means you’ll learn to design and manufacture modern, high-performance products across a range of industries.
You’ll also learn about microcontroller programming, software for computer-aided design (CAD), and how to implement engineering solutions with economic constraints. For example, you’ll take part in an engineering design project where you’ll design and manufacture a prototype.
You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in practical and industrial-led projects. You’ll use the knowledge and skills gained throughout your studies to present solutions to industry experts.
We are the only Scottish university taking part in the CMS Collaboration, a major experiment at the Large Hadron Collider CERN. Our students have had the opportunity to visit the site during their studies.
You could also join our DRIVE racing team. Each year, they design, build, seek sponsorship for and race a single-seat, rear-engine racing car as part of the global iMechE Formula Student competition at Silverstone.
If you do not meet our academic grade requirements for your chosen course, we can offer you an alternative route to begin your studies. Our international incorporated degrees will develop your subject knowledge, academic English and university level study skills.
As a mechanical engineer you may find yourself working on projects to improve the effectiveness of traditional energy systems, increasing the efficiency of energy generated by oil or gas while at the same time working towards near zero emissions generation.
Alternatively the need for long term, clean, renewable sources of energy is growing rapidly. Wind, wave, solar, tidal, geothermal, and vegetable all require talented engineers to develop them to a stage where they can seriously compete with traditional methods and so offer a genuine clean alternative.
Demand for graduates in this area is immense with many of the multinational energy companies, including BP, Shell, and Exxon, recruiting significant numbers of new engineers annually to work in both traditional and emerging energy technologies.
The International Year Zero is the first year of the four year undergraduate course. IYZ is designed to help you gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English Language, before you continue to year one of your chosen University undergraduate degree course.
Following successful completion of the IYZ, you will continue onto Year One of your degree directly with the University of your choice.

Students at the International College may be considered for a number of Scholarships that are part of the University of Dundee Scholarship offerings, such as the Global Citizenship Scholarship which awards students up to £5,000 per year of study. Another award is the ICD Progressing with Excellence Scholarship which recognises academic achievement while studying at the International College and awards up to £6,000 per year of study.
These scholarships are awarded for the University of Dundee period of study. Other Scholarships may be available for the ICD period of study, and you should contact your agent or Oxford International regional representative for full details of these.

Oxford International offers a number of scholarship opportunities for students applying for an academic course under the Core Scholarship. The scholarships are targeted at different regions around the world, awards range from partial contribution towards tuition fees to awards covering part or full pathway course fees at the international college.
