At the postgraduate level, the pre-master’s provides either one term (10 weeks) or two terms (20 weeks) of preparation for entry into a 1-year master’s degree in computing.

This course will allow you to attain a range of computing and information systems discipline-specific skills and experience, enabling
you to succeed on the level 7 stage of the programme.

Studying a master’s in computing at the University of Greenwich can help you advance your career as a business analyst, web designer or systems developer and a range of other disciplines.  In addition, the University of Greenwich has a long-standing relationship with the British Computer Society (BCS), which accredits its computing degree programmes.

To join this course you will need to have successfully a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and meet the English language requirements. We offer Pre-sessional English which is a 6 or 12-week extension course for those who may not yet meet the required English language standards for direct entry to our pathways.

What you will study

Alongside core modules, you will study subject-specific modules that will equip you with a foundation of knowledge for your chosen field of study.

Subject-specific modules

The aim of this module is to continue to develop your existing English language ability to prepare you for study at masters level at the University of Greenwich, in particular, raise your performance from a minimum of 6.0 IELTS to 6.5 IELTS (with no skill below 5.5) or higher and to further increase linguistic competence and boost confidence to a higher level in the use of English in the context of postgraduate studies.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the structure, demands and expectations of postgraduate study of business in the UK. There is an emphasis on the development of academic skills of particular relevance to study at postgraduate level.

This module introduces you to the vulnerabilities of computers and networks and provides students with an understanding of the motives and techniques of hackers and others who threaten computer and network security. The module develops and enhances your understanding of the methods that can be deployed to provide enhanced security to computers and networks and provides a wider context in considering ethical issues involved in developing and using programmes that threaten the privacy of individuals.

This module aims to provides you with a developed understanding of project management within a technical context and considers how management requirements set the parameters and establishes the desired outcomes of a project. This module aims to build on your existing English language ability and to prepare you for study at master’s level at the University of Greenwich, in particular, to raise your measurable performance from a minimum of 5.5 IELTS to 6.0 IELTS (with no skill below 5.5) or higher and to continue to increase linguistic competence and boost confidence in the use of English in the context of postgraduate studies.

The module aims to introduce and develop English skills directly relevant to Engineering and Computing through the academic study of their practical applications in a workplace context. It aims to train and develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the theoretical, technical, and practical aspects of Engineering and Computing as academic subjects. In Technical English, this is achieved by focusing on how more advanced and developed study skills and an appreciation of the specialised vocabulary and technical language associated with Engineering and Computing can underpin and progress academic studies.

This module aims to provide students with little or limited experience of Computing with a theoretical and practical introduction to Software Engineering. The module enables students to learn about the methodologies and approaches adopted in software development and places software development in the context of client requirements and demonstrates how these might be met in a wider context by introducing issues around sustainability, legal frameworks, and ethical considerations.

This module aims to introduce students to the concept of programming and enable them to become familiar with and use a programming language, Java, to construct simple programmes. The module allows students to deploy such programmes in solving practical problems and introduces them to the notion of coding and the adaptation of programmes to the requirements of organisations or businesses.

This module aims to provide you with the understanding of key concepts, recent developments, and issues within the strategy of business organisations, emphasising a critically evaluative approach to application.
